Level 1 AVERAGE Description

1.  key signature - 0-2 sharps or flats

2.  time signature - simple duple or triple (2/4, 3/4, 4/4)

3.  rhythm - half, dotted half, quarter, dotted quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes

4.  form - repetitive in nature - ABA, AB

5.  basic dynamics, clear sticking indications, standard beat beaming

6.  strokes - double vertical and single independent

7.  intervals - 2nds-6ths (no octaves)

8.  stroke tempo - eighths at 120 maximum

9.  wingspan - 2.5 (farthest intervallic spread between hands in unison)

10.  few wrist turns or mixed manual motion in entire piece

11.  independence - alternating or unison strokes; overlapping/mixed strokes as melody/accompaniment scenario

12.  average duration - 1' 30"

Level 1 Repertoire

These solos are all listed in Appendix 2 of Sequential Studies for Four-Mallet Marimba, Level 1.  Solos analyzed for the Performance Level System (PLS) had to have a minimum duration of one minute.  If the solo was not at least one minute long, it was not considered for inclusion into the PLS.
